The Calanchi valley

This awe-inspiring tracks in the heart of the “calanchi” valley boast some of the most dramatic scenery on Civita di Bagnoregio

The calanchi are the Italian badlands, clay hills eroded by wind and rain to form a unique landscape in Nothern Lazio. The Calanchi in the area of Civita are topped by a thin layer of tuff – a soft volcanic rock- which gives them a unique appearance and a greatly varied display of colours: from the endless shades of grey to the orange-yellow stripes of the volcanic rock, and the green of the few stubborn plants that hold out against the continuous erosion: brooms, wild oat, coltsfoot, meadow-grass, sloes. We’ll descend through this unusual landscape, hiking along the ridges with stunning views of the dying town.
