The mysteries of Bomarzo: the Pyramid, Pasolini’s waterfalls, Santa Cecilia

Hiking in the woods surrounding Bomarzo it is easy to chance upon some odd, ancient relic, dating back to unknown ages…

…. prehistorical altars, roman roads, Etruscan settlements are just some of the monuments that we’ll find. Places where to stay and meditate, grandiose works to admire and enjoy such as Santa Cecilia’s Byzantine cemetery and the Etruscan Pyramid.

The Bomarzo Pyramid it’s a striking monument, unique in the whole central Italy. It’s a megalithic altar, all carved out a huge grey volcanic stone, standing alone among the silent trees. The place, from whose summit it’s possible to overlook the green Tiber valley, is consecrated to forgotten gods and follows mysterious rules. Its origins are unknown, scholars haven’t found out what it was created for.
The path then goes down to the bottom of the valley, along the river to find old abandoned mills covered with lush vegetation, moss and ferns, and the waterfalls portrayed in a famous film by Pier Paolo Pasolini.
The walk can feature one of the locations (about 1h 30 to 2h 30) or join the three of them on a unique journey.
