From the maze of the medieval town to the amazing Etruscan excavated road. A day around the world-famous hilltop town.
Pitigliano, Sorano, and Sovana are known as the “città del tufo”, the tufa villages. Medieval settlements perched on high buff of red rock, maybe the most iconic view of Maremma. But underneath the middle ages boroughs, there lies a network of excavated roads, created many centuries before by the first civilization who settle in Central Italy, the Etruscans.
We will walk along the medieval maze of intercepting narrow streets in the city center, with its houses perched on a spur of tuff – to leave it for the deep of mother earth along the mysterious vie cave, the Etruscan excavated roads. There are many vie cave around these three centers, some of them no longer than few dozens of meters, some winds for about a kilometer: all of them are deep, windy, mystical. We’ll hike one of the lesser-traveled trails – but the most inspiring and truest side of Pitigliano and the città del tufo, but ones that offer some of the most impressive scenery in the Southern Tuscany. Don’t miss a hike with one of our professional guides to find out all about the mysterious people.
