In the heart of Province of Viterbo is Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. The lake has an oval shape typical of crater lakes, it’s over 13 km long and around 80m deep. The entire lake is surrounded by hills, and the landscape is incredibly varied: from the rushes to grassland and farms, woods, medieval “borghi” and tourist establishments.
This area is said to be one of the most attractive in Central Italy, and the lake has a long tradition. Prehistoric people founded villages by its shores, the Romans called it “Lacus Volsinii”, popes used to rest by its towns and pilgrims and travelers from all around the world have stopped here on their way to Rome.
It’s also a wonderful place for people to come on holiday – to relax, to enjoy water sports, to sunbath, and, of course, to visit the historical city centers of Bolsena, Montefiascone, Marta, Capodimonte, Valentano, Gradoli and Grotte di Castro.
There are several itineraries, from the four-day hike around the lake, to day trips where historical and natural views go together.
